Preservation Awards
The West Hartford Historic District Commission is pleased to

historic character. Your efforts will enhance the present, keep
the charm of the past alive, and protect the future of our town.
Any residential or non-residential property originally built prior to 1945
and located in West Hartford is eligible for consideration. Improvements
for which the property is being nominated should have been completed between
September 16, 2004 and March 16, 2006.
Awards will recognize the following: most improved building with regard to
sensitive restoration of original design; a new addition in keeping with
the original structure and setting or a new building that is part of a historic
complex or campus; adaptive reuse of a building which preserves the original
architectural character; an historic paint color scheme; historic landscape
design; landscape design which enhances the architecture and setting of the
property.
Nomination
forms may be obtained from the office of the Town Clerk, 50 South
Main St, Room 312; from the West Hartford Public Library Main Branch at 20
South Main St., Bishops Corner Branch at 15 Starkel Rd., Faxon Branch at
1073 New Britain Ave. Nominations are due no later than March 16, 2006 and
will be reviewed and voted upon by a panel of seven jurors. Awards will be
presented during National Historic Preservation Week, May 8 -13, 2006.
The Historic
Preservation Awards Program was introduced in 1998 to encourage
sensitive renovations to town properties which maintain traditional value.
Since then, a diverse group of properties has been honored in all categories.
Numerous private single and multi-family homes were awarded for restoration
of wood shingles, tile roofing, stucco, brick, porches, doors, windows, and
other decorative features; new additions of rooms, porches, garages; varied
historic gardens and landscape designs;and historic paint color schemes for
every type of house from a 1915 Craftsman Bungalow to a 1938 Colonial Revival.
Examples of public buildings which received awards are adaptive reuse of
the former A.C. Petersen milk truck garage to West Hartford's first community
theater - the Park Road Playhouse, adaptive reuse of a historic
firestation to retail/office space for Firehouse Square, and adaptive reuse
of two residences to an office for Hartford Family Institute; renovation of
Brighton Gardens at Hamilton Heights; restoration and additions to the Rentschler
Estate at Renbrook School and Kingswood-Oxford Middle School; and landscape
design for First Church of Christ Congregational. Over the years, St Joseph
College has earned three awards in the categories of restoration, adaptive
reuse, and new addition. The Noah Webster House Museum has been presented with
two awards for restoration and new addition.
Our theme for 2006 - Restoration Revival - was inspired by the 2005 First Place
award winner at 4 Mohawk Drive. The home designed by Lester Beach Scheide
in 1930 and now belonging to Amy and Stephen Sills was magnificently restored
by David Booth Beers, III, CGR. Extensive research and use of photographic
evidence was accompanied by constant attention to quality workmanship and
materials. Take a look at our poster currently on display around town and
you will see that from 1932 to 2005 it appears as if nothing about the house
has ever changed - the mark of a a true restoration! We invite you to participate
in the Ninth Annual Historic Preservation
Awards Program and contribute to the Restoration Revival!
