Taxes
Why are car taxes
paid only once a year now?
In an effort to operate more efficiently from a cost and time standpoint,
the town switched to a one-payment schedule for motor vehicle taxes. The
new system means bills are printed and mailed only once a year and full
payment is due August 1. With only one tax-bill mailing to 45,000 car
owners, expenses are reduced by $4,600 and records are more up to date.
What period do
tax bills cover?
For motor vehicles, taxes are for the previous year. And for real estate,
taxes are paid a year in advance.
Why do I receive
a tax bill for a car I do not own?
The most common reason for receiving a tax bill for a car you do not own
is the license plate on the old vehicle was not turned into the Department
of Motor Vehicles and your local Assessment office was not notified of
the change. In order to remove you from the town's tax records as the
owner of the vehicle, you must bring proof to the Assessment office that
the car was sold, totaled or registered out of state. Your tax bill will
be adjusted according to the number of months you owned it.
