Permits,
Licenses, and Ordinances
Fence
Permit: (860) 561-7555
A fence
permit is required for any fence construction being done in the Town
of West Hartford. The maximum height allowed for fence construction is
7 feet behind the building lines, 4 feet high and 50% open in front of
the building line.
Fence
Regulation: Please be advised that in the Town of West Hartford it
is permissible to face the fence in either direction. It is not necessary
for the more attractive side of the fence to be facing your neighbor.
You are entitled to have the more attractive side of the fence facing
your direction. Fence regulations apply to all types of fences, any structure
used as an enclosure, barrier, or partition.
Follow
one of the three links for the exact regulations for your type of lot:
Applications for permits
are accepted in Zoning
Office, Room 214 from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday. There
is a $70 fee (payable by check to the Town of West Hartford) and a diagram
is required which shows the property, gives the type of fence to be constructed
and shows where the fence will be placed.
Fill
& Grade Permits: (860) 561-7540
No fill shall be deposited on any lot within the Town without the prior
written approval of the Director of Community Services. The Director may
attach reasonable conditions to said approval, including a requirement
that the applicant make application for an inland
wetlands and watercourses permit if the land appears to be in an inland
wetlands area as delineated on the Official Inland Wetlands and Watercourses
Map. For more information, contact the Planning and Zoning Office at (860)
561-7555. A permit from the Engineering
Office is required when a significant amount of clean fill is needed
on a site.
Game
Licenses: (860) 561-7430
State hunting and fishing licenses are available at the Town Clerk's office.
As of December 1, 2008, the Town Clerks office will no longer be
issuing Sport/Fishing licenses. Please visit the DEP
website for online license registration.
Inland
Wetlands & Watercourses Regulations:
(860) 561-7555
Technical information, map interpretations, and regulatory direction concerning
a particular parcel of land in the community are provided to residents
and developers regarding the application of the Town's inland wetlands
and watercourses regulations. The Town Planning and Zoning office recommends
a pre-filing conference for Inland/Wetland permits. Please call (860)
561-7555 during regular business hours (Monday through Friday, 8:30a.m.
to 4:30p.m.) To speak with a zoning official. Click here for a Guide
to Inland Wetland & Watercourses Application and here for the
application and fee
schedule.
Land
Records: (860) 561-7430
The receiving, recording and maintenance of permanent records of all real
property transactions of the Town takes place in the Town Clerk's office.
Marriage
License: (860) 561-7430
The couple to be married must appear in person at the Town Clerk's office
in the town in which the ceremony will take place to complete an application
and to take an oath. As of October 1, 2003 the state of Connecticut
has changed the blood test requirement for marriage licenses. Marriage
licenses, which are acquired from the town in which the marriage is performed,
will no longer require a blood test. The price stays the same
at $30 and $10 for a certified copy.
Motor
Vehicle Dealer/Repairers Location Approval: (860) 561-7555
The Connecticut General Statutes require local approval for the location
of motor-vehicle repairers and dealers. While the state is the issuing
authority for the dealers/repairers license, the Zoning Board of Appeals
is the agent for local approval.
