The objective
of property assessment is that each property owner bears his appropriate
share of the tax burden. To meet this objective, the assessment
staff discovers, lists and values, according to Connecticut statutes,
real estate, business personal property and motor vehicles as of
October 1 each year. This list of property established on October
1st of each year becomes taxable for the fiscal year beginning on
July 1st of the following year.
The staff also
provides data to a wide variety of internal and external customers
and administers State programs for tax relief for homeowners, veterans
and totally disabled persons who meet certain requirements.
