Display House Numbers Prominently for Emergency Services

WEST HARTFORD, CONN. (August 29, 2005) – The town’s Zoning Office wants to raise your awareness about a very important feature of your house -- your house number! House numbers are more than a decoration. They actually serve as the first step in locating you during an emergency. Police, fire or ambulance services depend on prominent house numbers when seconds count.

Town Ordinance Chapter 155, Section 155 states “numerals used to indicate the house and street identification shall be located on the exterior of the building or part of the building which they identify. They should be at least 4 inches in height and shall be of a color contrasting with the color of the background provided by the material to which they are affixed.”

Take a look at your number and see if it meets this safety code. If not, consider making a small change that could save your life.
