The Volunteer Services Program is part of the Human Services Department of the Town of West Hartford. Through the program, volunteers are recruited to provide support services to elderly (aged 60 and over) and disabled residents. The program also supports the Social Services Division through a variety of special projects. Services are provided free of charge to residents of West Hartford, subject to the availability of volunteers.

Referrals for volunteer services can be made by calling the volunteer office at (860) 561-7567. Our trained Social Work staff provides initial assessment and screening.

Volunteer training and educational programs are provided on a regular basis for all volunteers. On-going communication, follow-up and support is provided for all volunteers by the Volunteer Coordinator.

Programs Offered

Friendly Visitors - provide friendship, socialization and support through weekly or bi-weekly one hour visits which may include walking, conversing, sharing a meal, reading, or helping to sort mail.

Grocery Shoppers - volunteers do the weekly grocery shopping for the frail elderly of the community. With special arrangements, seniors may accompany adult shoppers to the grocery store. This is an opportunity that adults, teens and families can enjoy.
