Trails at Westmoor Park

1. Welcome to the Virtual Nature Discovery trail. This loop will take you through a cross-section of the Westmoor Park habitats. This guide will illustrate the changes that occur during winter in the forests, fields, and waterways. There will be separate trail guides available for spring, summer, and autumn. While on this trail, remember to look closer at the trees, logs, and scenery. Click on certain points of this tour to discover more! These pages may take a minute to load the images, so please be patient. Enjoy!

2. The tree to your left is an evergreen and only loses about ten percent of it's needles a year. Pines can be identified by their characteristic bundles of needles. This tree is a Scots Pine which grows needles in bundles of two and has large round cones that hang down. Note the characteristic orange flaky bark at the top of the tree. White-breasted nuthatches harvest slivers of this bark to use as nest material for the next breeding season. Nuthatches display somewhat unusual behavior as they climb down tree trunks headfirst, foraging for insects and calling their nasal "yank" and "tootoo" notes.
