Special
Investigation Division
The
Special Investigations Division, which answers directly to
the Chief of Police, is responsible for handling highly sensitive
investigations. Narcotics and vice is their primary area of
responsibility, with ongoing investigations into organized
crime, drugs and prostitution, and illegal gambling and liquor
use. The division also handles internal affairs and is responsible
for full investigations into the backgrounds of new recruits.
In
performing their jobs, members of the division are often called
upon to conduct highly skilled surveillance operations using
state-of-the-art audio and video equipment. These and other
specialized capabilities come as the result of in-depth training
at the federal level with the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA)
and at other major institutions.
SID
detectives also undergo extensive and extraordinarily specific
training in the use of polygraph technology, and the division
is one of only two in the state with the credentials to own
and operate a polygraph unit. This capability, which required
months of off-site training, has benefited the department
in that it dramatically speeds up criminal investigations,
and has been proven to be an extremely useful tool in streamlining
the police recruitment process.
