Marriage Licenses & Civil Unions

If you are getting married in the Town of West Hartford, you will need to apply for your license in the Town Clerk’s Office, 3rd floor, Town Hall.  The couple must appear in the office to sign the Marriage License and present photo ID's such as a driver's license or passport. Once issued, the license is good for 65 days.

The fee for a marriage or civil union license is $30.00. If the bride is planning to change her last name, she may wish to order and pre-pay an additional $20.00 for each certified copy of the marriage license. A certified copy is required by social security and DMV to make a name change. People planning a name change as a result of a civil union are encouraged to do a legal name change through Probate Court, because it is unclear at this point whether those agencies will accept a certified copy of a civil union license. Please complete this Marriage/Civil Union License Application and bring it with you to the office or fax the completed form to 860-561-7438. Please plan to arrive 30 minutes prior to closing in order to process the Marriage License.

Requests for certified copies of marriage or civil union licenses should include those parties’ names and date of event along with a copy of your driver’s license. Copies are available for $20.00 each. To request a certified copy by mail, print out the Request Form for Certified Copy of Marriage License.

We are happy to provide the couple with a list of West Hartford Justices of the Peace. Arrangements can be made directly with the Justice you select. Please click here for the list of Justices of the Peace Justices of the Peace.
