College Police Academy

"Behind the Badge"

January 5 - January 16, 2009

Hollywood and the media portray a law enforcement career as one of C.S.I., high speed chases and bad guys confessing within an hour or two of an arrest. The objective of the Behind the Badge program is to address the misconceptions and show the students what police officers really do. The West Hartford Police Department's long history of integrity, respect, commitment, fairness and courage is conveyed throughout the program.

The West Hartford Police Department is offering its fourth College Police Academy starting January 5, 2009 and will run through January 16 2009. There is a limited class size of 20 attendees.

College Academy

What Will You Learn - The trainee will recognize the fundamental duties, obligations and philosophies inherent with the acceptance of a position as a police officer. He/she will possess a working knowledge of the employing agency's organization, chain of command, and rules and regulations.

When We Meet - The College Police Academy consists of multiple classroom sessions, one 8 hour stations day and a "ride along" with a West Hartford Police Officer. The classroom sessions will be held at the West Hartford Police Department and possible trips to outside facilities. The stations day will be determined at a later date and the ride along requirement will need to be completed by the end of the academy. There is a physical fitness component to this offering as well that will help prepare each student to successfully pass a standardized fitness requirement.

Earn College Credits - This program may meet requirements towards your Law Enforcement internship.

Who May Attend the Academy - Any interested college student between the ages of 18-25 and who have no prior felony convictions are encouraged to attend. Classes are limited to 20 attendees. The cost of the class is $50.00.
