LEAF COLLECTION UPDATE
(November 14, 2008 )
The bagged leaf collection program began on Tuesday, October 14th. Bagged leaves will be collected on your refuse collection day through Friday, December 19th. Please have your leaf bags at the curb by 6 am on your refuse collection day. Only leaves in 30-gallon bio-degradable paper leaf bags will be collected. No bags weighing over 60 pounds will be collected. Please remove any contaminants from your leaf bags such as rocks, branches and trash. Overweight bags and bags found with these contaminants will be marked with an X and are no longer eligible for curbside collection. Plastic bags containing leaves will not be collected at the curb. Residents may bring plastic bags containing leaves to the Recycling Center located at 25 Brixton Street, but since the plastic bags are not recyclable, residents will have to dump the leaves out in the designated area and dispose of the plastic bags with their trash.
The Recycling Center schedule during leaf collection season is: Mondays from 7:30 am until 7 pm, Tuesday through Friday from 7:30 am until 4 pm and on Saturdays from 8 am until 2 pm. Leaf collection season officially ends on Friday, December 19th.
The vacuum leaf collection program began on Monday, November 3rd in the northeast quadrant of all refuse collection areas and on designated high traffic streets. On Monday, November 10th, the vacuum collection proceeded into the southeast quadrant of all refuse collection areas and on designated high traffic streets and on Monday, November 17th, the vacuum collection will begin in the southwest quadrant of all refuse collection areas and on designated high traffic streets. Leaf piles should be at the curb by 6 am on Monday, November 17th. Please note that depending on the progress of the collection, some crews may skip ahead in to areas not scheduled for collection until the following week. Please be assured that the collection crews will be back in your area the following week as scheduled. This practice is meant to keep crews productive and get leaf volume off the street, so please do not be alarmed. Also, please be aware that there will be no clean-up collection in 2008.
Residents wishing to know
which week their street is scheduled for collection can type
in their address to see when leaf vacuum crews will be in their area.
A town map displaying the quadrants in each refuse collection area is
also available on the Public Works website in the Leaf Collection Section. On that map the rotation for the vacuum collection program will be from quadrant #2 to quadrant #3 to quadrant #4 to quadrant #1.
Please remove rocks, branches and trash from your leaf piles. These items can injure personnel, damage the vacuum machines and slow down the collection. Leaf piles found to contain these items will be skipped and residents will then have to bag their leaves if they wish to have their leaves collected at the curb. Please note that the leaf voucher program for residents utilizing private contractors has been eliminated because it was costly, abused by some landscapers and unmanageable. All private contractors must pay at the rate of $54.00 per ton to dispose of leaves at the Town’s recycling center located at 25 Brixton Street. A ton of leaves is roughly equivalent to 32 full bags or 4 cubic yards of leaves. Residents may still drop off their leaves and leaf bags at no charge at the Recycling Center.
