VETERAN'S BENEFITS LOCAL OPTION - EXTENDED BENEFITS The West Hartford Town Council adopted a local ordinance on May 10, 2005 to provide additional benefits to veterans by increasing the eligible income limits. The income limits are $61,500 for a married couple and $54,800 for a single person. The exemption is an assessment reduction of $10,000 or 10%, whichever is greater. Qualifying income includes the adjusted gross from the Federal Income Tax plus Social Security for calendar year 2007. Applications and proof of income must be filed no later the October 1, 2008 for exemptions on the October 1, 2008 Grand List. You will be required to leave copies of your income with the Assessor. STATE PROGRAM The Town of West Hartford Assessment office would like all veterans, and their spouses, to be aware of additional veteran’s benefits which they may be entitled to receive if they meet certain income requirements. Applications must be filed by October 1, 2008. To be eligible, the veteran must meet the following criteria: 1. Must be a resident of the Town in which the exemption is claimed. 2. Must have served or currently serving in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or the Coast Guard of the United States 90 days or more during a time of war, or have a disability rating by the Veterans Administration of 10 percent or more. 3. Veterans must have been honorably discharged and file the original or certified copy of their DD214 with the Town Clerk prior to October 1, 2008. 4. World War II veterans of any nation signator to the United Nations Declaration of January 1, 1942, who participated in armed conflict, are eligible for exemption if they have been a U.S. Citizen for ten years. 5.
