to review summer weather safety tips:
Burglar Prevention: Be sure that you give your house a though check before taking off for the day or week on a trip. Check that windows accessible from the ground are closed and locked. Doors should be closed, locked and dead bolted. Dead bolts should have a bolt which is at least one (1") inch long. The strike plates should be secured with three (3") inch long hardened screws. Read our brochure for home security (requires Adobe PDF reader).
Air conditioners in the window should be secured to the sill. This will make it difficult for a burglar to enter you home by pushing in the A/C unit. Cut back plants and bushes from the window sill height and from around entry ways. Windows accessible from the ground should be closed and locked when not at home. Any second floor windows should use ventalation stops or window pins. Burglars use ladders to gain entry through the second floor windows so be sure to keep your ladder locked up. If you see you neighbors ladder out, remind them to lock up their ladder also. Their ladder might be used against you some day.
Burglaries occur not only to houses but to cars and garages. Store your power equipment under lock and key. Bicycles should be stored away, even if not using them for a few minutes. Don't leave them parked in the driveway or laying on the front yard. It really only takes a minute for someone to take it. Register your bike at the police station for future reference.
Heat Safety: The summer months can bring stifling heat. Be aware to heat advisories. Seek shade or shelter during the peak hours of the day (10 AM - 2 PM). If at any time you feel weak, nausea, dizzy, get assistance immediately. Heat strokes and Heat exhaustion are common illnesses in the summer months. Stay hydrated with water or a vitamin enhanced beverage. Alcohol does not quench thirst. If you don't feel well, have shortness of breath, dizzy, or light headed call 911 IMMEDIATELY!.
Many people seek air conditioned shelter at the mall or movies. Try and park you car where there might be shade on it when you return to it. Don't leave any items of value like GPS units, phones, laptop computers visible in your car.
Summer Vacations: Summer months means day trips and summer vacations to the beach. Let your neighbors be aware of your travel plans. Have them park their car in your driveway while you are gone. Stop mail and newspaper delivery while you are away and place the TV and lights on timers that would replicate your normal activity schedule if you were home.
Barbeques: Never operate a grill indoors. The smoke and emissions from the grill can make you and your family very ill quickly.
Weather: Be aware of not only heat advisories but violent storms which can pop up quickly in summer time. During a thunder storm, evacuate family and friends from the pool and seek shelter in a building, not under a tree. If on a golf course, move to the club house until the storm passes.
Hurricane season has already begin. Prepare an emergency kit containing sealed non-perishable food items, batteries for a small radio, a flashlight, and fresh water.Keep the radio tuned to an advisory station to know when the hurricane has passed. Be sure that the calm of the storm is not just the eye of the storm passing over.
Dress appropriately for the weather including long sleves and pants during high heat times of the days. Sunglasses and head cover is as important as a strong sunscreen.
