Police Officer Applications - The West Hartford Police is currently accepting applications for the position of police officer. Click here to see the requirements to become a police officer and for a job application.

Job Opening: The West Hartford Police Department has openings for School Crossing Guards.

Starting salary is $15.59  per post (2 posts per day. Most run about 45  to  60 minutes).

Bonuses include: a $3.00 per post bonus for longer posts that cover both middle and elementary schools as well as a $10.00 bonus for two weeks perfect attendance.

Behind The Badge - The College Police Academy consists of 10 classroom sessions, one 8 hour stations day and a ride along with a West Hartford Police Officer. The classroom sessions will be held Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM- 4:00 PM January 5, 2009 through January 16, 2009. Applications are due by November 30, 2008.

The student recognized the fundamental duties, obligations, influences, and philosophies inherent with the acceptance of a position as a police officer. He/she will possess a working knowledge of the West Hartford Police organization, chain of command, and rules and regulations.

Any interested college student between the ages of 18-25 and who have no prior felony convictions are encouraged to attend. Click here to download a current brochure (Adobe pdf file). Assistance with the Dr. George Readon Investigation: The West Hartford Police Department is working with the Sexual Assault Crisis Services to assist victims through this difficult time. We are working with this Crisis Service to form a support group.

Laws of Interest:

Gun Law Changes - The CT General Statute 29-28(b) states that the issuing authority needs to be notified of an address change within two (2) business days. The address change includes the old address with the new address and your permit number.

CT Public Act #07-163 replacess CT General Statute 53-202g and states that any gun owner shall report the loss or theft of a lost/stolen firearm to the local police agency within 72 hours of when such person discovered or should have discovered the loss or theft.

Free Gun Locks - The West Hartford Police Department has received a shipment of gun locks. These gun locks were provided to agencies across the country through Project ChildSafe and is funded by a $50 million grant from the U.S. Department of Justice. West Hartford residents can pick up a free gun lock at the police station (limit 2 per person).

Car Seat Law - Any person who transports a child six (6) years of age and under and weighing less than sixty (60) pounds, shall provide and require the child to use a child restraint system. Any person who transports a child under one (1)year of age or weighing less than twenty (20)pounds in a motor vehicle on the highways of this state shall provide and require the child to ride rear-facing in a child restraint system.
